Nancy Gowan is a registered Occupational Therapist and Certified Disability Management Professional with experience working in industrial rehabilitation, accommodation and workplace planning. She has a Bachelor of Health Sciences, Occupational Therapy from McMaster University as well as a Diploma in Occupational Therapy from Mohawk College.  Since graduating in 1988, Nancy has assisted local and national employers with the development of health and disability management strategies, which have added bottom line profits through improved productivity and access.  She has implemented client centered health and disability management programs for many companies, yielding returns on investment ranging from 10% to 600%.

Nancy works in partnership with employers, employees and unions to develop customized strategies that will bring sustainable savings and improved employee health and productivity.

She has presented at national and international forums on accommodation and disability management and regularly contributes to disability management education through workshops and training programs as well as online newsletters.  She is also involved with and chairs various committees addressing planning, facilitation, and education with many work-health related issues.

Among her many publications in journals, magazines  and newsletters Nancy has also written the following books,

  • Nancy coauthored a chapter on “Ergonomics in Disability Management” in Ergonomics for Therapists, 3rd edition, 2007.
  • She has published a “Human Resources Managers’ Guide to Managing Disability in the Workplace” with Carswell, Thomson Reuter’s publications in 2010.
  • The second edition of this guide was published in 2016 and renamed “ The Human Resources Guide to Managing Disability in the Workplace, 2nd Edition”. 2016
